Cameroon top Group A despite a draw with Cape Verde

Cape Verde came from behind to draw with Cameroon, but await other results to know their fate in the round of 16

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon were held to a 1-1 draw by Cape Verde but retained the top spot in Group A at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Vincent Aboubakar got his fifth goal of the tournament when he scored in the 39th minute after receiving a pass from Harold Moukoudi to give Cameroon a 1-0 lead.

But Garry Rodrigues hit back for Cape Verde in the 63rd minute after an assist from Kenny Santos to level the score for the Blue Sharks.

Cameroon, having won two games and drawn one, topped their group with 7 points, and will face a third-placed team from Group C, D, or E in the round of 16 on 24 January. 

Cape Verde who are third in their group behind Burkina Faso with 4 points from a win and a draw, however,  face a nervous wait to see if they will progress to the knockout stages. 

Meanwhile, the other game in the group between the Stallion of Burkina Faso and Ethiopia was played simultaneously and ended in a 1-1 draw. 

Cyrille Bayala put Burkina Faso ahead in the 24th minute, but his goal was cancelled in the 52nd minute after Getaneh Kebede equalised from the penalty spot. 

The Stallion moved on to the knockout stages after coming second behind Cameroon, while Ethiopia crashed out of the tournament after earning just 1 point.
