Burkina Faso, Uganda, crash out of WAFCON

Burkina Faso and Uganda played a 2-2 draw in their final Group A game on Friday and are effectively out of the competition after gaining a point each

South Africa joined Morocco and Senegal in the quarter-finals, while Burkina Faso and Uganda are out of this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).  

Banyana Banyana defeated hard-fighting Burundi 3-1 in a match played at the Prince Moulay Al-Hassan Stadium on Thursday afternoon. 

South Africa with the win, consolidated their position at the top of Group C, with 6 points from 2 matches, although the group is still wide open, the group winner will emerge on Sunday after the final group games.  

Morocco and Senegal had earlier qualified for the last eight of the tournament on Wednesday, after winning their first two fixtures against Uganda and Burkina Faso, the other teams in Group A.

Burkina Faso and Uganda who played a 2-2 draw in their final group games on Friday, July 8 are effectively out of the competition having gained a point each.   

Morocco defeated Senegal 1-0 in the other game to top Group A with 9 points, while Senegal, having won 2 games and lost 1, came second with 6 points. 

Group B which contains Zambia, Tunisia, Cameroon, and Togo will go down to the wire, as any team can still qualify for the last 8 or get eliminated from the tournament depending on the outcome of their final group game later today.  

In Group C, Nigeria need a win against Burundi in their final match to automatically qualify for the quarter-finals, while Botswana must avoid a defeat against South Africa to progress.
