Buhari declares June 12 Democracy Day, honours Abiola with GCFR award

The Federal Government on Wednesday declared June 12 Democracy Day and proceeded to honour the winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola with the highest honour of the Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

Many Nigerians think that June 12 is the most suitable and proper day to mark democracy day in Nigeria and not May 29.

President Muhammadu Buhari in making the declaration also honoured the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, with the highest national honour.

Buhari’s administration may have scored an important goal that would excite the  pro-democracy and human rights community.

On June 12, 1993 Nigerians united to vote Abiola without recourse to religion, ethnicity or ideology.

On May 29, 1999 Nigeria returned to civil rule and ever since, the country has been celebrating her democracy Day on May 29, but many thought it was more befitting to do so on June 12.
