Rising against the tide of sensitivity between the adherents of the two major religions in the country, Islam and Christianity, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, may have settled for a Muslim as his running mate in 2023 election.

Tinubu is a Muslim from the South Western part of the country and angling to pick a fellow Muslim from the north.

Channels Television quoted Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, as confirming on Friday that Tinubu, has agreed to go on with the choice, even as Christians and even some Muslims are opposed to the idea

Ganduje made the comment during a gathering of about 100 clerics at the Kano state government house as part of activities to mark Eid El Kabir.

“We have advised him to pick a Muslim deputy and he has agreed,” Ganduje said.

“A Muslim-Muslim ticket is a reality. It is not something new in Nigeria.”

Ganduje asked the clerics to pray for Tinubu to emerge as Nigeria’s president come 2023.

He also urged them to offer prayers for his administration’s peace and progress.

Ganduje equally asked the clerics to pray for his Deputy Governor, Yusuf Gawuna, who emerged as the APC governorship candidate in Kano State for 2023 elections.

Apart from Ganduje, Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has also argued that there is nothing to worry about in Tinubu not picking his running mate from the Christian segment of the north.

The last time Nigerians had two Muslims running for the presidency and vice presidency, was in the annulled June 12, 1993 election, when the late MKO Abiola, ran with Babagana Kingibe.

Those that argue against the match now, cite the extreme religious intolerance and sentiments in the country.
