Super Eagles with the narrow win remain top of Group D of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers with 7 points from three games

Super Eagles edged past Libya in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations’ qualifying match played at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on Friday evening. 

The host moved the ball around with confidence early in the game but failed to carve out any real scoring opportunity.

Alex Iwobi conjured Nigeria’s first chance of the game but his shot was saved by Libya goalkeeper Murad Al Wuheeshi.

The Super Eagles continued to pile more pressure on the visitors’ defence, with Al Wuheeshi producing another decent save to deny Ademola Lookman.

Captain William Troost-Ekong shot wide from inside the box two minutes before the half-hour mark.

After the game resumed, the visitors continued to sit back and soak up pressure but second half substitute, Dele-Basiru broke the deadlock in the 87th minute after he was teed by Moses Simon.

With the win, Nigeria remain top of Group D with 7 points from three games and they are closely followed by Benin Republic who are on 6 points from the same number of games. 

Rwanda occupy the third spot with 2 points, while Libya are bottom with a single point.
