Lagos State on Monday became the eight state in the South to have an anti-open grazing law.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu signed the anti-open grazing bill, which the State House of Assembly passed on September 9 after it scaled the second reading and went through a public hearing, into law.

The law prohibits open grazing and trespass of cattle and for connected purposes.

With the signing of the bill into law, Lagos now joins Rivers, Bayelsa, Oyo, Ekiti, Abia, Akwa Ibom and Enugu as states with anti-open grazing legislation.

Southern governors in Nigeria had reached a resolution on July 5, 2021, in Lagos, for member states to enact legislation against open grazing of cattle in their states on or before September 1.

Only five states were able to meet the deadline.
