The climate of uncertainties hovering on Rivers State lately, took more unpredictable turn on Monday as the state Assembly moves to impeach the governor, Siminalaye Fubara. Reports indicate that the lawmakers had signed an impeachment notice on the governor, earlier in the day.

Signs on the messy turn of events began to unfold when in a session that was presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon Martins Amaewhule and attended by a good number of members, the Leader of the House, Hon Edison Ehie and those loyal to the governor were suspended.

On Sunday night, an explosion had rocked the Assembly in what was alleged to have been a ploy to stop the lawmakers from gaining access to the Assembly on Monday.

Notwithstanding, as early as 7 a.m., some lawmakers made their way into the House and immediately commenced plenary where they all signed the impeachment notice on the governor.

In reaction, the embattled Governor Fubara has declared that he has done nothing to warrant impeachment by the state House of Assembly.

Fubara made the declaration while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex, shortly after the House members, led by their Speaker, Amaewhule, convened to begin the impeachment process against him.

“Let them come out and tell Rivers people the offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” the governor said while addressing his supporters at the Assembly Complex.

He added, “Let me assure the people of Rivers that I will continue to ensure that you get the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time I will address the press.”

Fubara who assured the people of the state of getting the dividends of democracy, said he would speak on the matter at the appropriate time.

There have been reports of face-off between the governor and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, currently the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, who facilitated his rise to power.

Meanwhile, the entire Moscow Road leading to the Rivers State House of Assembly has been barricaded by armed policemen.
