Ex-Deputy Governor of Edo State Philip Shaibu has condemned his impeachment by the State House of Assembly.

State lawmakers sacked Shaibu Monday morning over alleged gross misconduct, which he failed to defend at the panel constituted to investigate the matter.

In a video recording obtained by TheNiche, Shaibu addressed Edo people and Nigerians in general, saying: “I denounce in strongest terms the illegal impeachment by the Edo State House of Assembly over trumped-up charges.

“This is not just an attack on me as an individual but on the very democratic principles that we hold dear. It’s a dangerous descent into dictatorship and a threat to the foundation of our democracy.

“Let it be clear that this impeachment was hatched because of my ambition to contest the Edo State 2024 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), an ambition that is a legal right to all citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Shaibu vowed to fight the “injustice” done to him, calling on Nigerians to stand by him.

To the lawmakers, he said, “History will judge harshly for your betrayal of the people who elected you to represent their interest. But know this, you do not have the power to silence the voice of justice and truth.”

He also called on the judiciary to uphold the principles of justice and fairness, stating that he would challenge the impeachment legally.

Shaibu urged his supporters to remain calm and go about their lawful businesses.
