Gunmen have abducted a former governorship candidate in Imo State, Uche Nwosu, after firing a barrage of bullets into the air to ward off his police security aides.  But the Imo State police command later issue a statement, saying Nwosu was not kidnapped but arrested.

He was kidnapped during a church service. The kidnap was captured in a video recorded by some congregants who also read out the plate number of the getaway vehicle to be Abia UMA 110 AA. It’s not clear if the getaway vehicle belongs to the kidnappers or part of Nwosu’s convoy.

According to the voices in the video clip, the kidnappers stormed the St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Eziama-Obaire in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State.

The incident occurred during the Outing Service of Uche Nwosu’s mother, late Jemamah Nwosu.

Nwosu was in the village for the burial last weekend.

According to eyewitnesses, the gunmen stormed the church while service was still on and shot into the air.

They thereafter bundled Nwosu into the trunk of the waiting vehicle amid gunshots and panic wailings of onlookers.

After the reports of Uche Nwosu’s abduction went viral, the Imo State police command said he was arrested and not kidnapped.

The statement reads: ARREST OF CHIEF UCHE NWOSU

This is to inform the general public that chief Uche Nwosu was not kidnapped but was arrested by the police and Imo state police command is aware of the arrest and presently he is in police custody.

This is to refute the earlier news that has being making rounds on social media that he was kidnapped by unknown persons / gunmen.
