BREAKING: Emefiele gets N300m bail after denying unlawful printing of banknotes

By Jeph Ajobaju, Chief Copy Editor

Godwin Emefiele has been granted a new N300 million bail after pleading not guilty to allegation filed in court by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he printed N684.5 million banknotes at a cost of N18.96 billion during his tenure as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor.

Emefiele, who is fighting off several other allegations of impropriety and corruption while on the job, is the sole defendant in this particular charge before Justice Maryanne Anenih of the Abuja Federal High Court.

Other conditions attached to the bail include that he

  • Should produce two sureties who must each possess titled property in the Maitama area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
  • Deposit his travel documents with the court and should not travel outside the country without the permission of the court.

The Judge adopted the conditions attached to a similar bail previously granted Emefiele by Judge Hamza Muazu of the Abuja Federal High Court, before whom Emefiele is being tried for another criminal offence allegedly committed when he was in office.

Anenih said it would suffice if Emefiele is able to produce the certified true copies (CTCs) of the documents he submitted in fulfilment of the bail granted by Muazu.

She adjourned the case until May 28 for the commencement of trial.

This is breaking news. Details later…
