19 staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were kidnapped but later released on Saturday, March 18, 2023, on their way to conduct the State House of Assembly election in their assignment areas.

Nineteen ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) were kidnapped on Saturday, March 18, 2023, on their way to conduct the State House of Assembly election in their assignment areas. They were however released following intervention by security agents.
A report from the state said that the incident took place in Ideato Local Government Area.

“The 19 kidnapped NEC ad-hoc staff have been rescued by security operatives following a distress message but the electoral materials seized from them, including BVAS machines, are still missing,” the report said.
Imo State is not holding the governorship election today as the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, did not assume office on May 29, 2019 but much later after being declared winner by the Supreme Court.
Imo has been among the states that have been challenged by incidences of kidnap and other forms of criminalities, lately.
