Chelsea chairman, Todd Boehly has justified why the west London club handed Brazil defender, Thiago Silva, a new one-year contract despite his age.
Under his watch, the Blues have embraced and embarked on a policy of signing younger players on long-term deals.
However, despite being two years shy of 40, Silva’s experience is viewed as a crucial component of the squad’s development under head coach Graham Potter.

The 38-year-old Brazilian international has started 18 of Chelsea’s 21 Premier League matches this season even though the club signed some young central defenders during the summer window.
Speaking after the contract extension, the club chairman described Thiago Silva as a world-class talent, whose experience, quality and leadership skills are vital to Chelsea’s vision in the future.
“We’re delighted that Thiago has decided to continue with Chelsea.
“He’s a world-class talent, as he’s proven over many years for club and country, and his experience, quality and leadership skills are vital to our vision going forward.
“We’re thrilled he has extended his contract with us and we look forward to more success with him ahead,” Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said.
