Few days after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) decried the incessant posting of police commissioners to Bayelsa State, the state House of Assembly has resolved to resist and would not be intimated by the Inspector General of Police whom it accused of conniving with members of the ruling party from the state notably the former governor of the state Chief Timipere Sylva and the minister of state for Agriculture, Senator Heneiken Lokpobiri .
The Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Konbowei Friday Benson, addressed the media after an exhaustive Saturday sitting on a motion moved by Hon Bernard Kenebai, who lamented the incessant posting of commissioners of police every month was not conducive for democracy as a police officer needs to understand the terrain and familiarize himself with the people he was posted to protect and secure.
He also condemned the plan to disband the Operation Doo – AKPO, an internal police outfit constituted by the Bayelsa State government when it came on board in 2012 ,which the populace had applauded, stressing that any attempt to disband it will return the state to the days of orgy security problems which the former Governor of Bayelsa State formed operation Famtagbe (kill and throw away) to terrorize the the state.
Majority of the 24-member of the state House, Mitema Obodor, Ogbia Constituency 2, Hon Koku Ebiowou Obiyai Yenagoa constituency 2, Hon Iwowari Nembe constituency 3, Hon Monday Bubou Southern Ijaw constituency among others jointly condemned and vowed to resist any attempt by the IGP and members of the ruling part, APC, led by former governor Timipere Sylva and Senator Heneiken Lokpobiri and urged them to use their vantage position to attract development and dividends of democracy which the state is in dire need of.
The speaker also urged the house to support the prayers of the motion that the matter be brought to the floors of green chambers and red chambers and called on parliamentarians from the state to call attention of IGP and state police command to jettison the plan to disband Operation Doo – AKPO.”
The incessant posting of police commissioner is uncalled for, an aberration. The Ijaw Youths Council and civil society should join the house to condemn it.”
