Bayelsa guber: 1 killed, scores injured as APC, PDP supporters clash

A member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, Comrade Andrew June, was killed on Friday and several other persons injured in separate clashes between supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and APC in the Ekeremor and Southern Ijaw Local Government Areas of the state.

The violent clash is coming few days after the signing of a Peace Accord initiated by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) among the 18 governorship aspirants contesting the December 5 election in the state.

The deceased APC member, Andrew June was ambushed by suspected PDP thugs at Oweigbene community in Ekeremor Local Government Area of the state.

The Bayelsa State Police Command spokesman, Astimin Butswat,confirmed the killing of Andrew June and said the incident led to the reprisal attacks by the APC supporters and the burning of houses belonging to PDP members in the Area.

According to the Police, ”Yes,one person was killed in a clash in Ekeremor. But I don’t know their political affliations. The clash was between thugs or cult related clash but investigation is ongoing to determine the status of the fight.”

The family of the deceased claimed that he was killed by a mob of PDP supporters allegedly sponsored by a PDP chieftain, Chief Alex Ekiotenne.

Sources confirmed that Mr. June and several APC supporters who sustained various degrees of injuries as a result of the attack were ambushed at Toru-gbene community en route to Oweigbene after the APC rally in Ekeremor town, Ekeremor Local Government Area on Wednesday.

The deceased and other APC supporters sustained injuries from matchet cuts and were rushed to Ojobo General Hospital in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, where Mr. June later died. The injured APC members are still receiving treatment in different hospitals in the area while the remains of the deceased have been deposited in a mortuary at Oporo.
