Banyana Banyana book final spot after 1-1 draw with Algeria

 

South African senior female team,  Banyana Banyana won the home tie 2-0 and advanced to Morroco on a 3-1 aggregate

Banyana Banyana of South Africa have booked the final spot in the African Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Morocco after they drew 1-1 away to Algeria, but advanced on  3-1 aggregate on Wednesday night.

Algeria had taken a 1-0 lead through Koui Sylia in the last minute of first-half additionnal time when she placed a header over goalkeeper Andile Dlamini after an assist from her captain, Naima Bouheni.

Motlalo stepped up after a handball in the Algeria penalty area, Banyana’s number 10 dispatched the resulting spot-kick, and put her side level and 3-1 up on aggregate.

Twelve countries have now qualified for this year’s Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) in Morocco.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons qualified shortly before the South Africans after beating Côte d’Ivoire’s Lady Elephants 1-0. 

The Super Falcons qualified on a 3-0 aggregate win after beating Lady Elephants 2-0 at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja last week.

This year’s AWCON edition will feature 12 teams and will commence from July 2 and end on July 23. The Banyana Banyana booked the final spot after beating hard-fighting Algeria. 

Teams that have qualified are Morocco, which qualified as host nation, Nigeria, Cameroon, Uganda, Burundi, Senegal, Togo, Zambia, Tunisia, Botswana, and South Africa. 

Super Falcons have won the Women’s Nations Cup a record-breaking nine times and will now be gunning for an unprecedented tenth title in North Africa later in the year.
