Ayra Starr has notched up more than two billion streams on Spotify, coinciding with news of her topping nominations for the 2024 MTV European Music Awards (EMAs) with her being picked in four categories.
Ayra Starr’s achievement on Spotify – which has made millionaires of musicians from Davido and Rihanna to Taylor Swift and Burna Boy – also comes on the heels of her second album, The Year I Turned 21 having garnered more than 500 million streams on the platform.
The album’s genre-bending sounds and introspective lyrics have contributed significantly to Ayra Starr’s streaming numbers.
Her rise to fame began with her self-titled debut EP in 2019 which swiftly catapulted her through the Nigerian music industry.
Nomination for 2024 EMAs
It emerged earlier this week that Ayra Starr is nominated in the 2024 EMA for Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Act, Best African Act, and Best Push.
In the Best New Artist category, she faces tough competition from other famous artistes such as Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, LE SSERAFIM, Teddy Swims, The Last Dinner Party, and South Africa’s Tyla.
And Tyla stands out in the Best Afrobeats Act category, competing against heavyweights like Burna Boy, Tems, Rema, Asake, and Ayra Starr.
