Atiku, Fubara, other PDP heavy weights storm Edo for Ighodalo’s grand rally
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara and other chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party have stormed Benin, the Edo State Capital for the grand finale of the party’s governorship campaign in Oredo.
The PDP rounds off its campaign rally today for its candidate, Asue Ighodalo who faces a tough contest against Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party.
There are fears that the election could be tense owing to the hot exchanges between camps of the PDP and the APC. The PDP on Thursday refused to sign a peace accord ahead of the election.
Of the 17 political parties contesting the poll, 16 signed the treaty, with the ruling PDP the only party which declined to be part of the agreement.
The state PDP chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, and its governorship candidate, Asue Ighodalo, were present at the peace accord signing but stoutly declined to follow suit.
Aziegbemi hinged their action on the alleged arrest of 10 PDP members currently detained by the police in Abuja.
He said, “We are here to register our protest before the peace committee and to say that the PDP will not sign a peace accord when 10 of our members have been arrested and detained by the Police in Abuja.”
