A final year student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS)  was at the weekend raped and murdered by attackers her head of department still cannot figure out whether they were rapists or assassins, another in the growing cases of rape in the country.

Ruth Yakadi, from Plateau, was murdered after being raped by her assailants in a viral video showing her lying near a canal with blood all over her body.

Eyewitnesses of the scene in Farin Gada community said the corpse was discovered on Sunday morning.

The discovery angered some residents, who staged a protest. Other miscreants took advantage of the situation to attack traders and passersby.

UNIJOS English Department Head Jeff Doki, a Professor, confirmed to The PUNCH Yakadi was waiting for her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation after her project.

“I have lost three students since I became HOD [head of department] in 2021; two males in July and September 2022 during the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU],” he lamented.

Yakadi was round off her project

“Information reaching me indicates that the girl who was killed last night (Saturday) at Farin Gada is a spill-over student of our department,”  Doki added, per The PUNCH.

“She was supervised by Dr Douglas Kaze and had issues with her long essay. Perhaps, she was done with the project perhaps she was not.

“Information available shows the girl was raped and killed thereafter. As things stand now, we are wondering if they are rapists or assassins.”

Plateau police spokesperson Alfred Alabo confirmed the incident, but explained he has little information about it.

“You even have information about it more than me. The long and short of it is that we are aware of the incident. Investigation is on and when we’re done, we will get back to you,” he said.
