Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta has hit out at match officials, especially the centre referee, Andrew Madley, after refusing to award two penalty claims to the Gunners on Tuesday night.

Madley waved away several penalty appeals from the Arsenal players during a Premier League (PL) encounter, as the league leaders were held to a 0-0 draw by Newcastle at the Emirates.

Arteta, who described the decision as “scandalous”, felt his team should have been awarded at least two spot-kicks having failed to breach the Magpies’ backline.

The moments were a shirt tug from Dan Burn on Gabriel Magalhaes and Murphy’s handball incident deep into extra time.

Arteta during the post-match interview said: “We had so many situations and then we had two scandalous penalties.

“They are two penalties, it’s very simple. I’m talking about what I’ve seen, now, and it’s two scandalous penalties.”

Arsenal after the draw with the high-flying Newcastle United are now eight points ahead of second-placed Manchester City.

However, Pep Guardiola’s side could close the gap to five points on Thursday night if they are able to beat Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge.
