Arsenal beat Man City 1-0, leapfrog PL champions into 2nd place

Arsenal next face Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge after the international break

Arsenal defeated Premier League (PL) champions, Man City 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium to go second behind North London rivals, Tottenham.

The largely disappointing game was settled four minutes from time just as both sides looked certain to have to settle for a point.

Making his return from a hamstring injury as a substitute, Gabriel Martinelli’s 86th-minute strike deflected in off Nathan Ake to earn Arsenal a first league win over City since December 2015.

However, the biggest talking point until the goal was how Manchester City’s Mateo Kovacic somehow stayed on the pitch after successive late tackles on Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice.

Arsenal next face Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge after the international break, while Man City will welcome 5th placed Brighton.

Meanwhile, Liverpool and Brighton played a 2-2 draw at the American Express Community Stadium earlier in the day.

At the same time, visiting Aston Villa held Wolves to a 1-1 draw at the Molineux Stadium, while Newcastle United forced West Ham United to a 2-2 draw in front of their fans at the London Stadium.
