The off-season governorship election in Anambara State which will hold in Novermber 2021 promises to be an interesting, albeit tough election going by the calibre of people jostling for the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Though the election is more than a year away, 12 aspirants, all of them formidable, have already indicated interest to run on the platform of the opposition party, even as the party chairman in the State, Sir Ndubuisi Nwobu, harps on the need for free and fair primaries in order to select the best candidate.
Speaking with reporters in Awka on Tuesday, Nwobu said the aspirants should discard the idea of knowing party executives in the state and concentrate on how to woo the party delegates.
He said the primaries would be keenly contested because of the calibre of aspirants.
According to the PDP Chairman, the aspirants include heavyweight politicians, business moguls and denizens of the corporate world such as Valentine Ozigbo, Senator Uche Ekwunife, Emeka Etiaba SAN, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, Hon. Chris Azubogu, Ike Oligbo, Chuma Nzeribe, Ugochukwu Okeke, Ifedi Okwenna, Dr Godwin Maduka and Godwin Ezeemo.
Nwobu, maintained that nobody is being giving preferential treatment among the contestants for the party’s ticket, adding that it was their duty to discuss with the delegates and not the Executive.
He frowned at the number of court cases instituted by party members in the state numbering about eight, adding that they should follow the guidelines of the National Working Committee (NWC) by withdrawing such cases to move the party forward.
“If we get it right during the primaries here which is why I am working hard with my executive, we are going to chase out the current party in power out of government, and God willing, it will happen.”
