Amokachi accepts appointment as President Buhari’s sports adviser

Nigerian veteran footballer, Daniel Amokachi, has accepted the role of Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on sports, officials have disclosed.

The appointment of Amokachi, also known as De Bull, was announced on August 17, 2020, in a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Boss Mustapha stated.

The appointment letter reads: “I am pleased to inform you that Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has approved your appointment as Special Assistant on Sports.

“The appointment takes effect from the 11th of August, 2020.”

Officials say Amokachi has since resumed the role as Special Assistant on Sports, which requires him advising the president on all the sports even though his strength is football.

Amokachi was early in the year named as Nigeria’s Football Ambassador, a role that required he provides mentorship to young Nigerians.

Amokachi started his career with the National Steel Football Club, an amateur team of the National Steel Company.

He was later signed as a striker for the Ranchers Bees in Kaduna, before proceeding t Club Brugge of Belgium, Besiktas of Turkey, Everton of England and Colorado Rapids.

Amokachi is rated as among the successful Nigerian footballers having played three World Cup finals, won two Africa Cup of Nations as both player and Assistant Coach, to Stephen Keshi, Austin Eguavoen, Samson Siasia, and Lars Largerback.

In the Atlanta Olympics, Amokachi was part of the Dream Team that won Gold in the football event.

His career was cut short by injuries, and since then, he had taken the coaching career.

Amokach started the coaching career with the Nasarawa United. He also coached the U-23 National Team, and served as Assistant Coaches  to  Samson Siasia, Stephen Keshi and Lars Laggerback.
