Amid hunger, NAFDAC intercepts N3.8b unregistered food products following a tip-off

Officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have confiscated unregistered food products valued at more than N3.8 billion in Lagos.

NAFDAC disclosed in a statement on X that its personnel stormed a warehouse at the Apongbon Oke Arin Market in Lagos following a tip-off on the sale of the food items in a warehouse.

It said investigation is still ongoing and those responsible will be sanctioned upon conclusion.

“Various unregistered items valued at N3,818,802,720 were seized during the operation, and the facility has been placed on hold pending further investigation.

“The warehouse management has been summoned for questioning, and appropriate sanctions will follow after investigations,” NAFDAC posted.

“We reaffirm our commitment to protecting public health and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. We also urge the public to remain vigilant during the festive season and report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.”

Cultism suspect, a youth, confesses “driven by hunger” to steal

The news throws up an irony in the case of a young man suspected of being a cultist who confessed that he was driven to steal by a combination of hunger and a lack of family support.

Borokini Ayodeji, 25, who was arrested and paraded in Akure by Ondo vigilante  outfit, Amotekun, lamented that he was abandoned hence he dabbled into stealing to survive.

He confessed to being a member of the Eiye confraternity and to stealing from a government general hospital in Akure.

The suspect disclosed he is a trained tailor but resorted to stealing because of poverty and a lack of support to establish his trade.
