Bayer Leverkusen head coach, Xabi Alonso, has said his desire to focus and win the Bundesliga made him snub the opportunity to replace Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

He made this known ahead of his team’s Champions League match against Liverpool on Tuesday.

Alonso was one of the coaches linked to the job in March, after Klopp announced he was leaving Anfield at the end of last season.

However, the former Liverpool midfielder opted to remain with the Bundesliga champions, Bayer Leverkusen for at least one more season rather than take the job.

Speaking on why he didn’t join his former club, Alonso said, “I saw the links to replace Klopp… but at that time I was focused on winning the league.

“We were only working on that, I didn’t negotiate with clubs.”

Liverpool eventually settled for Dutch tactician, Arne Slot, who is currently topping the Premier League after 10 matches.
