In a historic turn of events, Fulham’s Alex Iwobi has set a new benchmark in the English Premier League, surpassing the illustrious record previously held by Nigerian football legend, John Mikel Obi.
During Fulham’s recent clash against Newcastle United, where the home side suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat, Iwobi showcased his endurance and skill by playing the full 90 minutes. This performance has propelled his total Premier League minutes to an impressive 16,289, thus eclipsing Mikel Obi’s former record of 16,218 minutes.
Iwobi’s journey in the Premier League commenced with Arsenal in 2015, marking his debut on October 31 of that year. Following a successful tenure with the Gunners, the versatile midfielder transferred to Everton in 2019 before eventually joining Fulham last summer.

Throughout his career, Iwobi has been a consistent presence on the pitch for his respective clubs, accumulating significant playing time. In the current season alone, the 27-year-old has made 24 appearances for Fulham in the league, contributing five goals to his team’s efforts. His total Premier League appearances stand at 247, accompanied by 22 goals.
Prior to Iwobi’s remarkable achievement, John Mikel Obi had held the title for the most minutes played by a Nigerian in the Premier League. Mikel Obi, renowned for his 11-season tenure with Chelsea, enjoyed a decorated career, securing two Premier League titles, four FA Cups, and a Champions League crown during his time with the Blues. His Premier League journey comprised 249 appearances, wherein he notched one goal and provided 10 assists.
