Alex Iwobi’s late striker earned Merseyside club Everton a boost in their quest to beat the drop and continue to play Premier League soccer next season.

The Toffees had won only one Premier League game of the last twelve, coming into the encounter, and after scoring in the ninth minute of additional time, they were reduced to 10 men.

An average game, in which none of the sides was able to breach the defence of the other before the break, was delayed for a few minutes by the referee, Craig Pawson when a protestor tied himself to a goalpost.

Evertons’ combative midfielder Allan was given the marching order in the 84th minute when the referee judged he took out Newcastle substitute Allan Saint-Maximin after VAR review.

At that stage, and with 14 minutes of stoppage time, it looked like Everton were going to defend, putting their bodies on the line and settling for a point.

But in the 99th minute, substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin broke away and slipped the ball to Alex Iwobi who calmly found the bottom corner.

The home side then held on for the few minutes remaining and ensured they earned the all-important 3 points, consigning  Newcastle to a second consecutive defeat in the process.

With the win, Everton have increased the point between them and the relegation zone to 3 points, while Newcastle still have a 9 points cushion too.
