“Afenifere rued some of the Tinubu administration’s profligate predilection or inclination to waste resources” – Afenifere

Afenifere has expressed disappointment at the worsening poverty of Nigerians since Bola Tinubu became President on 29 May 2023, with the economy being run aground by his failed promises and intentional insincerity while he makes himself comfortable with an expensive jet and several SUVs at huge cost to the treasury.

That means Nigerians are in worse economy situation than they were even in the locust years of Muhammadu Buhari, the country’s worst ever President who ruled like a monarch feeding fat on the sweat of citizens and never concerned about and never accountable to the people.

A communiqué issued at the end of Afenifere quarterly meeting at Isanya-Ogbo in Ogun, chaired by Deputy Leader Oladipo Olaitan, cited hardship, hunger, insecurity and sky-high unemployment across the country, stressing Tinubu lacks the competence to efficiently manage public funds.

“Afenifere noted that the Nigerian people are sorely troubled by the pervasive hardship, crippling hunger, unremitting insecurity in the land, runaway inflation, massive unemployment, etc. all of which have left the people worse off than they were at the beginning,” the communique said.

“Afenifere also observed the reckless, obstinate and indifferent attitude of the government to the long-term effects of the lack of forethought or purpose regarding the handling of the public revenue.

“Afenifere rued some of the Tinubu administration’s profligate predilection or inclination to waste resources, viz.

“(a) $100 million or N240 billion as purchase price for an Airbus A330 as jet for the President and a further $50 million to retrofit it.

“(b) N950 million each as purchase price of a new set of armoured Cadillac Escalade Limousine SUVs as befitting vehicles for the President.

“(c) N21 billion for renovating a new mansion for the Vice President.

“(d) N90 billion as subsidy for religious pilgrimage.

“(e) N10 billion to renovate the Presidential Lodge at Ribadu Road, Lagos, etc.”

Afenifere also criticised the harassment of media professionals while performing their duties and urged Abuja to familiarise itself with Section 39 of the Constitution, which protects the freedom of the press and expression.
