Afenifere asks tribunal to resolve presidential election quickly to ensure justice

Afenifere has asked the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) to resolve disputes about the election on February 25 before Muhammadu Buhari hands over power on May 29.
The group reiterated its support for “the victory of Peter Obi” of the Labour Party (LP) in the election, insisting a President from the South East would guarantee equity, fairness, and peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.
Afenifere at its April general meeting in Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun State, urged the tribunal sitting at the Court of Appeal to ensure speedy resolution of all petitions before it and to do so transparently so that all Nigerians can see that justice is done.
Obi and the LP are challenging at the tribunal the declaration of Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Timely and justly resolution of petitions
A communique signed after the meeting by Afenifere leader Ayo Adebanjo and Secretary General Sola Ebiseni implored the judiciary to ensure all presidential election petitions are “timeously and justly resolved before the end of the tenure of the Buhari administration,” according to reporting by Daily Post.
Afenifere described this as the only way to earn the confidence of Nigerians in the judicial system.
It said examples in this regard have been set even by less endowed countries in Africa.
Afenifere also asked the federal government not to waste funds by committing about N100 billion to the coming population census, saying there is no compelling reason why the census must be held by “the expiring” Buhari administration.
It called for “all steps and preparations in that regard [to] be stopped forthwith.”
