Abuja claims to spend N6.3tr on education in 7 years

A total N6.3 trillion has been spent on capital and recurrent expenditure to improve infrastructure and Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment in schools across the country since 2015, the government has said.
Education Minister Adamu Adamu disclosed at the Ministerial Briefing organised by the Presidential Communications Team in Abuja that the sum was spent to revitalise teaching from basic to tertiary levels.
“In the last seven years, we have undertaken massive physical development of infrastructure, ICT development at all levels of our educational system, established new institutions, improved the carrying capacity of our institutions and expanded access to quality education at all levels.
“Steps are also being taken to accelerate the implementation of the 2020 presidential approval for the revitalisation of the teaching profession,” he said.
“The government of President Buhari has expended a total of N6,300, 947, 848, 237 on capital and recurrent expenditure in the education sector in the last seven years.”

Basic and secondary education
Adamu added that the government is committed to overall development of education, saying the basic and secondary levels have also received N553 billion, per reporting by Nairametrics.
“When we look at basic and secondary education, the ministry has invested heavily in the construction, renovation and rehabilitation of classrooms, hostels and laboratories as well as some other issues like security and other infrastructural facilities at the basic and secondary levels.
“In the last seven years, a total of N553,134,967,498.50 had gone into the development of infrastructure at basic and secondary school levels.”
Education and health
A total N1.76 trillion was allocated to education and health in the 2021 budget, a 56.3 per cent increase from N1.13 trillion in 2020.
Education allocation in 2021 was N1.13 trillion, health N632.7 billion.
The N1.13 trillion allocated to education in 2021 was 64.5 per cent higher than N686.8 billion in 2020.
