Absence of drug exhibits stalls hearing of drug trafficking case

The absence of drug exhibits on Friday stalled the trial of a 20-year-old man, Abubakar Isah, charged with trafficking in illicit drug.

Isah is standing trial before a Federal High Court, Lagos, on a one-count charge bordering on drug trafficking.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Isah had pleaded guilty on arraignment on June 3.

At the resumed hearing on Friday, the prosecutor, Mr Orji Kalu, a lawyer with the NDLEA, told the court that the case was for review of facts.

Kalu, however, prayed the court to adjourn the case because he did not come to court with the exhibits required to prove his case.

The prosecutor had told the court that the accused committed the offence on April 3 at The Young Shall Grow Motor Park in Oyingbo area of Lagos State.

Kalu said that the accused was unlawfully in possession of two kilogrammes of Indian hemp.

He said that the alleged offence contravened Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act Cap N30, Laws of the Federation, 2004.

Justice Ibrahim Buba, consequently, adjourned the case to June 30, for the review of the facts.

NAN reports that drug trafficking offence attracts a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if the offender was convicted.
