Abia govt tasks churches on establishment of varsities

By Onwukwe Ezeru, Abia

Abia Governor, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, has stressed the need for churches to feel the gap of moral decadence in circular universities by venturing into the establishment of their own.

The governor was speaking when he received the prelate /moderator of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria, Rev Emele Uka, and principal officers of the church, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Umuahia.

According to him, cultism is a major threat to circular universities as many of the students there could at best be described as murderers in training, pointing out that groups with capacity to offer moral training like churches should step in to fill the gap.

The governor said that the South East was lagging behind considering the number of universities there, adding that there was a major shortfall of university students seeking admission into universities from the zone.

He stated his commitment to assisting in the realization of the Presbyterian university and attributed his modest achievements to God while promising to continue to serve the people with the fear of God.

Also, the Moderator, Rev Uka, said that the visit was aimed at having a fraternal fellowship with the governor as well as to pledge their loyalty and prayed God to strengthen him.

He hinted that the church has developed the take-off site of the Hope Waddell University and applied to the NUC for inspection which is expected to come up soon and solicited the governor’s support to the realization of the university.
