90-year-old Cameroon’s Paul Biya may be next, reactions trail coup in Gabon

By Ishaya Ibrahim

After the military deposed Ali Bongo who won last Saturday’s controversial election in Gabon, Nigerians have predicted that the next port of call for soldiers may be Cameroon.

Ali Bongo was removed from office in the early hours of today after he and his father cumulatively ran the country for 54 years.

Gabon is one of the four countries colonised by France that has fallen into military rule. The others are; Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso and most recently Niger.

On X, formerly Twitter, Nigerians have warned the 90 year-old Paul Biya who has been ruling Cameroon in the last 41 years, to either quit or risk being kicked out by hot-headed military men who may be inspired by the wave of coups on the African continent.

@InibeheEffiong said: “Paul Biya, another French puppet and corrupt despot who has been in power for decades. This despot does not allow free and fair elections, free speech or independent judiciary. He lives partly in France. President Macron has no objection. One day, Paul Biya will pay a price.

@magwaz3 said: “Cameroon’s Paul Biya MUST be very worried after what happened to Gabon’s President Ali Bongo.”

@BiafranTweets said: “Paul Biya who ruled Cameroon from outside his country for Decades (40th Year) is next for the Military Revolution. ECOWAS and AU have failed the People with fraudulent elections!”

@BashirAhmaad said: “Only two people have ever served as the President of Cameroon. The office was established in 1960, following the country’s independence from France, and was held by Ahmadou Ahidjo from 5 May 1960 to 6 November 1982 and then by President Paul Biya since 6 November 1982. Nine years before I was born. Wow!”
