Nigerians woke up to the news that a 43 year-old post graduate student of the Ekiti State University (EKSU), Sunday Afeson, is now the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students.
The election, which was held yesterday, December 3, at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja, was characterised by chaos and violence, leading to delegates sustaining various degrees of injuries.
Asefon got 155 votes to defeat his closest rival, Olushola Oladoja, who scored 100 votes.
The emergence of a middle-aged man as the president of a student body has created mixed reactions.
A lawyer and former NANS president, Abdul Mahmud, said the election of a 43 year old is a parody of the Nigerian state.
“Heard a 43-year old has been elected NANS President. That’s twice the age I was elected NANS President on 22 November 1990.
How can a man in midlife crisis fight students causes? Nigeria is a parody!” he exclaimed.
A tweet from @AlawodeAfolabii said: “NANS President-elect, Asefon Sunday was Federation of Ekiti State Students Union National President in 2010. He was also the Zone D Coordinator in 2013. He is 43 years old. What should an old man like him still be doing in NANS in year 2020 when Emmanuel Macron became the President of France at the age of 40?”
