Army-Shi’ite clash: We’ve received over 100 memoranda – Judicial panel

The Judicial Commission of Inquiry into the Zaria clash between the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) and the Nigerian Army in December 2015 said it has so far received over 100 memoranda from various groups, associations, religious organisations and members of the public.

The 13-man judicial commission was set up by the Kaduna State Government under the Chairmanship of Justice Muhammadu Lawal Garba.

Dr. Bala Babies, Secretary to the Commission, in a statement in Kaduna, said the Commission would start public hearing on the matter, beginning from Sunday.

Babies said it has six weeks from the day of its first public sitting to submit its report to the state government. The statement also said oral submissions on the matter at the venue of the public hearing is allowed.

The Chairman of the Commission appealed to all stakeholders involved in the matter to cooperate with members of the commission during its sittings for a successful execution of the assignment.

The Commission, which has 13 terms of reference, according to the statement, would inquire into the immediate causes of the clashes and determine the historical circumstances surrounding the incident.

It will also find out the contributory factors and remote causes of the clashes, ascertain number of persons killed, wounded or missing during the clashes, as well as make appropriate recommendations to the governemnt, among others.
