The Department of State Service (DSS) has arrested one Abdussalam Enesi Yunusa, an alleged recruiter for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Kano and some converts, who were allegedly heading to Libya to join the group.
According to a statement signed by Tony Opuiyo of the DSS, the arrest was made on January 17, 2016.
“Yunusa’s arrest was sequel to available intelligence which indicated his terrorist antecedents and covert drive to indoctrinate and recruit susceptible youths in the country.”
It also intercepted another budding extremist cell affiliated to ISIS in Daura township of Daura LGA, Katsina State on January 17, 2016 while one Ibrahim Mohammed Daura, Zaharadeen Salisu and five other elements of the proscribed extremist group, Ansaru, were arrested by the service.
‘‘This group was discovered in an active stage, as its members were already co- ordinating themselves for attacks in Katsina and Kano.’’
The statement added that within the window of these tactical operations, between the month of December 2015 and February 2016, the service busted the network of syndicated kidnap gangs spanning different regions in the country, especially Kebbi, Zamfara, Niger, Nasarawa, FCT, Oyo and Osun states.
…raids Jonathan’s associate, AJ Turner’s residence
Meantime, DSS operatives have raided the Maitama residence of Bayelsa State monarch, King A.J Turner.
The operatives carted away some documents, including an undisclsed amount of foreign currency.
The DSS did not disclose why it raided the monarch’s residence.
In a swift reaction, the Committee for Defence of Democracy (CDD) condemned the raid describing it as abuse of power and rights.
The CDD also issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the DSS to give explanations and urged it to desist from a glaring war against allies of the former president.
It urged DSS not to declare needless war against the South-south zone, particularly on allies of Jonathan.
“If so much honour and respect can be accorded to the traditional institutions in the North and Yorubaland, same institutions in the South-south cannot be subjected to ridicule in the name of political vendetta,” the statement read.
