Rivers rerun: Wike’s dangerous threat in lead-up to March 19 elections

Gov. Nyesom Wike

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has drawn the attention of security agencies and other relevant bodies to dangerous threats by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike in the lead-up to the March 19, 2016 Rivers state rerun elections into the National Assembly and State House of Assembly.

Mai Mala Buni, APC National Secretary

APC National Secretary Mai Mala Buni in a statement on Wednesday said Governor Wike, in a brazen show of force, has told officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prepare their will before coming to conduct the elections in Rivers State.

Buni added that APC is also aware of threats by Nyesom Wike to civil servants in the state to either support and work for the People Democratic Party (PDP) or face sack.

The plot also include intimidation of eligible voters, INEC officials and security operatives deployed to ensure peaceful, free and credible rerun elections in Rivers state.

Security agencies must be on high alert over the dangerous threats by Governor Wike and, by extension, the PDP in the lead-up to the Rivers re-run election.

APC advises the Rivers Governor and the PDP to grow out of its penchant for ‘do or die’ politics. We reiterate previous calls on the PDP to embrace the new Nigeria where elections are peaceful and the votes of the people count.

While we call on INEC and security operatives to be mindful of the dangerous threats by the Rivers State Governor, the APC is confident in INEC and security agencies’ ability to deliver peaceful, free and credible supplementary election come March 19, 2016.

On election day, we urge the people of Rivers and all eligible voters in the state to go about their legitimate activities and vote massively for APC candidates in the National Assembly and State House of Assembly election rerun. The APC candidates are poised to contribute to the success of APC’s Change Agenda as well as deliver on dividends of democracy.
