Free Kaduna primary pupils’ feeding begins, will cost N9bn yearly
Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai Monday said his administration would spend N9 billion annually to feed the over one million primary school pupils in the state. He said the newly introduced free feeding programme for pupils commenced Monday as pupils resumed for the new academic session.
Addressing newsmen after an extraordinary State Executive Council meeting and retreat in Kaduna, El-Rufai said the free education system in junior secondary schools introduced by the state government would help save parents about N3.7 billion annually.
He added that 5,000 tailors would be engaged to sew uniforms to be distributed free to pupils across the state, adding that the free education system run by the ousted Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration in the state was a fraud as it was not on ground.
“You know anything about PDP is fraud. There was nothing like free education in Kaduna under the PDP because parents were paying school fees, levies and so on in our public schools. Under this administration, we have abolished school fees and all levies. We will provide free uniforms to all our children and we also approved free quality meal in all public schools”, he said.
The governor said the 2016 budget would be presented to the public for input first before being taken to the State House of Assembly for deliberation. He said he had given his appointees targets on how to deliver the APC campaign promises.
