17th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis LOC set machinery for hitch-free organisation

As the 17th edition of the Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship draws nearer, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has set up machinery for a hitch-free organisation.

Tournament Director, Wale Oladunjoye, told TheNiche that all hands would be deck to ensure the championship lives up to its international standard.

“We’ve set up machinery for a successful organisation of this year’s event and we are doing things best possible to surpass our achievements in the past editions of the championships.

“We’ve already begun work with the management of the host venue, the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club (LLTC), and so far, so good in terms of logistics and other planning,” Oladunjoye disclosed.

The championship, which is an International Tennis Federation (ITF) event, has will hold from October 6 to 21.

The Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF) said the world tennis governing body,  ITF, has approved the dates for the competition.

Also, the NTF in conjunction with the LOC headed by Pius Akinyelure and the Lagos State Government will organise the $100,000 prize money tournament (men and women categories) at its traditional venue at the LLTC in Race Course, Onikan, Lagos.

“Ian Smith, a South African, has been assigned by the ITF as the tournament referee, while Wale Oladunjoye has always been the tournament director since the completion began in 2000,” the NTF said.

It confirmed that all hands will be on deck to organise a memorable championship in October.

The 2016 edition was attended by players from more than 39 countries.

The first leg (Futures 5) of that competition was won by players of Spain and Slovakia in the men and women’s singles respectively.

Many dignitaries, including Secretary to the Lagos State Government, Tunji Bello, watched the finals.
