The death of a football fan, Kolade Johnson, is causing outrage on the streets of Lagos.

Johnson was killed by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on Sunday as the two English football clubs, watched Liverpool and Tottenham.

According to eyewitnesses, Johnson accosted the police operatives who arrested his friend and demanded to know why his friend was picked up.

In the process, he was shot dead by one of the policemen. He was later rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) in Ikeja but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Angry youths took to the streets and blocked both sides of the Lagos Abeokuta Expressway.

Lagos State police spokesperson said investigations have started to ascertain the cause of the problem.

“We got a complaint that some hoodlums blocked the road because a man was killed; we have deployed our officers in the place to clear the blockade and we are investigating the matter,” Mr Elkana said.

The death of Johnson has resurrected the #EndSars campaign with activists calling for the scrapping of the Anti-Robbery unit of the Nigerian police.

According to them, the unit has outlived its usefulness and either needs an overhaul or complete scrapping.

Many on social media narrated their ordeal or that of their acquaintances in the hands of the squad.

In January, the new Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, returned SARS to the command of the state police.

Activists said the move would see the police return to the dark days of killing, illegal arrests and maiming of innocent citizens.
