EU centre disowns statement on Nigeria’s presidential election

By Ishaya Ibrahim

The European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES) has disowned a statement credited to its head of programmes which said the February 23 Presidential and National Assembly elections were the most transparent and democratic in the history of Nigeria.

Many All Progressives Congress (APC) social media influencers have widely shared the posts claiming that the ECES said the election followed international procedures for democracy, transparency and vote counting.

A statement by Rudolf Elbling, Project coordinator, Nigeria of  ECES said: “We like to categorically state that the ECES dissociates itself from the above statement or infographic.

“ECES is an electoral assistance provider, and as such, does not observe, monitor or make statements about the conduct of any elections worldwide.

“…We condemn in strong terms such actions and reaffirms our commitment in providing technical assistance to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) within the European Union Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) programmes and will continue to work within the terms of reference guiding us.”
